For this project I have decided to look into an array of materials that can help reflect the nature of the site location. I would like to ensure the proposal reflects both historic and aesthetic features; this can be shown through materiality, form, space and order, and even through creating considering the history of the site; how the past can influence a potentially modern design.
Ironstone: This material can be found inThe Great Tew Quarry in (a ferruginous limestone) Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire since the early 17th Century. The unique stone material is medium to course grained with a variation of colour so buyers can have the freedom to choose. The colours range from orange/brown, dark brown to white with some fine grained mineral veins (RJDA, 2012).
The Derbyshire Carboniferous sandstone is used throughout the UK for both large and small construction projects. The material is extracted from the Dale View quarry, Matlock. The Stanton Moor buff sandstone is strongly associated and known to be apart of the architectural heritage of Derbyshire. The vigorous striking colouration of Stanton Moor sandstone can be found to have a buff base with brown, gold and wild pink variation; these colour variations add depth and character to both tradition and contemporary building designs (RJDA, 2012).
Established over a hundred years ago, the Great Hucklow Primary School features Stanton Moor sandstone on its external walls. The reason for choosing the Derbyshire sandstone was because it closely reflected the original stone masonry on the original facades (RJDA, 2012).
Choice of stone
For this project I have chosen to incorporate the use of stone to reflect the existing stone structures on the site. By looking into various stone materials I have been able to identify some examples that can help to reflect the character of the area. As my aim will be to create a design that reflects both historic and modern design; this material will help to capture the idea that I want to convey.
Out of the selected few examples I have decided to use Stanton Moor buff. The reason being is because it is because of the way it will closely reflect the character of the exiting stone structures and also because of the way it is strongly identified as apart of the Derbyshire architectural heritage.
